Working it out

 I painted the back of this experimental piece with dye paint and fell in love with it after I flipped it back over.  It is with this piece that I also concluded I prefer using metallics underneath and not on top...its the on top that makes me describe a piece as too garrish, they often steal the show...I just do no yet know how to handle the metallics in the foreground.  Here is what it looked like before I worked it out from interesting to whooooh!!!!!  The draw back is this is a small piece less than a fat quarter in size...I might be able to replicate it...it will be on my to do list for the coming week.  This is what it looked like before I painted the back side:

I don't understand this. Are you saying the dye paint was metallic? I am not familiar with metallic dyes. I want some!! It is a beautiful piece. I see text and hand stitching coming next.

hi gerrie, no, the dye paint was the burnt orange colour (can't recall the exact name but it was a mx procion)...the metallic was applied on the top and was regular fabric paint (maybe Luminere)...you can see it under the green in the before photo...after I applied the dye paint on the back it made the metallic and blue fabric paint pop! And the colours in the photos are very true to life.

okay, i went back to re-read my post...let me clarify a bit more...the metallic was painted on the topside of the fabric but it is in the background and not the foreground which I discovered through this piece that I prefered better than applyiing metallic last (in the foreground). I'm not sure if I apply too much or what when I apply a metallic on last but I always end up not liking it when I do.

the dye paint was painted on the "wrong" side of the fabric.

Really, really like the after pic. It has so much more interest, I;m glad you listened to the muse and carried on painting. Way cool.
